Spring color renews hope. It affirms that warmth and life are returning.

There are few things as exciting as seeing our Big Bear gardens coming to life as winter ends. Part of assembling an amazing garden should include selecting four-season color. Up here we have some amazing options for your Spring bling.
Daffodils are easy, reliable bulbs that have many colors available. They are best planted in bunches in late fall. They tend to be avoided by rodents because they are toxic. Tulips are beautiful, but they are a favorite snack of squirrels. Other fall planted bulbs like crocus, Hyacinth, snowdrops, allum, muscari, and more, provide brilliant in the early months of our garden.
Forsythia is a deciduous shrub that is well-known for its vibrant display of bright yellow flowers in early spring. These flowers appear before the leaves, often covering the bare branches in a cheerful burst of color. The shrub typically grows to a height of 8-10 feet, with arching branches that can spread out to a similar width. Forsythia is a hardy and low-maintenance plant that is relatively easy to grow in a variety of soil conditions. It prefers full sun but can also tolerate some shade. Forsythia is a popular choice for hedges, borders, or as a standalone specimen plant in the garden.

Flowering Almond, also known as Prunus glandulosa or sometimes as the “double flowering plum,” is a deciduous shrub prized for its beautiful, double pink or white blossoms that appear in early spring. These delicate, rose-like flowers densely cover the branches before the leaves emerge, creating a stunning floral display. The shrub itself is typically compact and rounded, reaching heights of around 4-6 feet. While it doesn’t produce edible fruit like the common almond tree, its ornamental value is undeniable. Flowering Almond prefers full sun and well-drained soil, and while relatively low-maintenance, it benefits from occasional pruning to maintain its shape and encourage abundant blooming. It’s a lovely addition to any garden, bringing a touch of springtime elegance.

These are just a few of the early bloomers which thrive in Big Bear. They are wonderful transition plants as we ease from winter into warmer weather. Come in to the nursery to see the plants we have for all of Big Bear’s seasons.
